10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY
SHORT ORDER BURGER CO.
BURGERS TO DIE FOR.
The Hardcore Collection by Thomas Sweetman
How do you usually approach translating heavy, underground style into wearable merch?
I think it’s just innate in my style these days, for better of for worse!
I approach all of my jobs as if they were for a band (even the infrequent corporate ones I do) and navigate how I can add my personal flair into their world, with the greatest respect to not cheapening the aesthetic or taking advantage of the worlds behind the aesthetics.
What made you excited to team up with Short Order on this drop?
Simon’s brief was great (love an opportunity to draw more skulls haha) and different to a lot of the merch ideas you see out there currently. I’m also a big fan of their No Name Burger so was a no brainer jumping into some concepts.
How did you merge burger culture with your design sensibility?
With a lot of my band work I’ll find a theme, signifier or even lyrics to work with and build the world from there. Simon hit me with the “burgers to die for” line so I used that to build from; skulls, pointy type work, and blackletter fonts mixed with streetwear aesthetics and burgers seemed to hit that sweet spot!
Is there a hidden detail or Easter egg in the design people should look out for?
I think I was listening to a lot of Obituary when designing the typographic tee (one with the red drips) - looks like some of that vibe spilled into the graphics haha
What part of this project pushed you the most creatively?
I love a challenge - trying to find a way to merge worlds in a tasteful way is what drives me and this definitely pushed me.
How does Perth’s creative and food scene influence your work?
My inspiration! Perth has some of the best scenes on the planet whether its arts, music, food etc, with everyone pushing the envelope and doing incredible things; and doing it their way. I’m lucky enough to call a lot of local business owners and artists my friends and have them as my muses. Perth is great, I actually like how small it can be at times - when one of us win, we all win.
What does “hardcore” mean to you outside of music and art?
Hardcore is heaps more than music and art; it’s a way of life that intersects all aspects of day to day life - be it how you interact with people, your beliefs and values systems and how you view the world. It’s an interconnected family from all walks of life that remains hidden to the normal eye. Sounds corny but it’s been a huge part of my life at this point and I definitely don’t take it for granted.
